In 2023, the first ever Indigenous Women's Football team was created. For 22 young Indigenous women, football is more than a game. It is a deeply rooted passion; it is an opportunity to lay a path forward for others to follow. Most importantly, it is the chance to showcase who they are and where they're from. For the Under-18 National Indigenous Women's tackle football team, the game is about unity, strength, perseverance and hope... and this is their story.
For three consecutive years, this 9-A-Side All-Star Team has proudly represented Alberta’s Indigenous youth on the national stage. Comprised of elite Indigenous athletes hailing from various nations and communities across Alberta, the team competes annually in the U18 Men's National Championship at the Indigenous Cup. Supported by Football Alberta, this program serves as a vital platform for provincial talent and the continued growth of Indigenous football.
In a historic achievement for Indigenous sports in Canada, Corbin Carwell was selected to represent his heritage and province at the 2024 Native All-American Football Game. Out of seventy elite high school athletes chosen from across the continent, Corbin stood out as the sole Canadian invited to this prestigious showcase.
The event, held at the iconic U.S. Bank Stadium—home of the Minnesota Vikings—was produced by the Native American Athletic Foundation (NAAF) in partnership with the NFL, giving Corbin a world-class stage to demonstrate his talent.
